Angelina Jolie may have one of the most recognizable faces of all time, but that isn’t stopping her from completely transforming into iconic opera singer Maria Callas for her upcoming role in director Pablo Larraín’s Maria — and now, we finally have a first look.
On Monday, the first photos of Jolie in the role were revealed ahead of the film’s 2024 release, one of which saw the actress slipping into Callas’s thick, brown-rimmed glasses along with a white chunky knit sweater. While Angelina kept her beauty look simple in the first shot, opting for minimal makeup and side-parted tousled hair, a second photo detailed a much more glam version of the opera singer complete with winged eyeliner, pearl earrings, and a wide-brimmed lace hat.
According to a press release, Maria will chronicle the “tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world's greatest opera singer, relieved and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris,” all based on true accounts.
Larraín, who previously directed notable biopics Spencer and Jackie, recently opened up about his excitement for the upcoming project, explaining, “I am incredibly excited to start production on Maria, which I hope will bring Maria Callas's remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steven Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation.”
Jolie also expressed her gratitude to have won the role, previously saying, “I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria's life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria's story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”
