The hottest movie of 2024 that was supposed to drop in 2023 is Dua Lipa's cinematic debut (besides her quick cameos in Barbie): Argylle. And with the reveal of the trailer today, the movie promises to have everything: everyone's favorite resale shopper Bryce Dallas Howard, Catherine O'Hara without a wig, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, and Samuel L. Jackson — all in a meta spy movie that also involved the WWE's John Cena and former Superman Henry Cavill with a spiky, gravity-defying hair transformation.
The film comes from director Matthew Vaughn, who you may know from the Kingsman franchise, and has Howard starring as novelist and bona fide cat lady Elly Conway. Somehow, her spy novels come true and that's where things get tricky. In the trailer, we get a glimpse of Lipa in a short, choppy blonde bob and one of her signature slinky dresses and, of course, very cute shots of Howard's character's cat, Alfie. Fun fact: the cat actually belongs to Claudia Schiffer, who happens to be married to the director.
The official synopsis goes like this: “Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.”
Argylle will hit theaters worldwide on Feb. 2, 2024, before being available to stream on Apple TV+. The movie was originally announced in June 2021 and was supposed to be released earlier, according to rumors spread on Dua Lipa fan tumblrs.
“When I read this early draft manuscript I felt it was the most incredible and original spy franchise since Ian Fleming’s books of the 50s,” Vaughn told the Hollywood Reporter when the movie was announced — and was already sparking rumors of sequels and an entire Argylle franchise. “This is going to reinvent the spy genre.”
