To commemorate his 20th wedding anniversary to Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas shared a touching audio message on Instagram that detailed exactly how he asked her out back in 1998. Since the two started dating, they've managed to be one of the steadiest couples in Hollywood, eschewing scandal and drama for critical acclaim (they've both got Oscars to their name) and keeping things low-key. The two married in 2000 and have two kids together, 20-year-old Dylan and 17-year-old Carys.
In his message, Douglas said that Zeta-Jones caught his attention when she starred in Zorro and that they first met at the Deaville Film Festival, though things weren't easy at first.
"I'm at a screening in Hollywood at somebody's house, and they're showing Zorro. And I'm watching this movie and I go, 'Wow, who is this girl? She's incredible.' A month later, I'm at the Deauville Film Festival ... and I see on the schedule, the next day at the festival, they're gonna have Zorro there!" Douglas said. "So, they get back to me, they say, 'Yes, Ms. Zeta-Jones is going to be here, she's only going to be here for one night. She's in the middle of shooting this movie Entrapment with Sean Connery, but would love to see you and have a drink."
Douglas continued, saying that he nearly blew it with a terrible pick-up line that could have ended everything before they even went out on a date.
"Sure enough, I must have been batting a thousand because after the movie, I'm sitting in the bar, and like Lawrence of Arabia, this mirage comes through the lobby. I'm thinking, 'Oh my goodness!' We sit down and we have a little nightcap," Douglas said. "I probably made a big mistake, but I looked at her and said, 'I'm gonna be the father of your children.' And she looked at me and she said, 'I've heard a lot about you. I guess it's all true. Goodnight.' And she left. Then, she left [the festival] early the next morning."
We all know that he didn't blow it, after all, thanks to the 20-year marriage.
"Happy 20th Anniversary my darling!" he captioned his post. "I love you always and forever @catherinezetajones." He added a red heart emoji for good measure.
