It took over a decade from being co-stars to being more, but Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis managed to make it work, even though they were both in serious relationships before they decided to go from Friends with Benefits to more. Kunis even mentioned that the two joke about her flick when they talk about the beginnings of their romance. Here's everything you need to know, including first kisses — both fictional and real — an epic fail of a honeymoon, and two kids.

Kunis and Kutcher appear together on That '70s Show. They were only 14 and 19, respectively. During the show's run (eight seasons!), the two would share an on-screen kiss as characters Jackie Burkhart and Michael Kelso. Kunis would go on to tell People that it wasn't just the pair's first kiss, it was her first kiss, ever — and she had a crush on him at the time.

"I was like, 'Oh, he's so cute, it's the Calvin Klein model! ... Then, I was like, 'I have to kiss him?' I was so nervous and uncomfortable. I had the biggest crush on him," she said.

Co-star Kurtwood Smith, who played Red Forman, told E! News that things were strictly professional between the two.

"Of course they played boyfriend and girlfriend, but they had completely separate lives … Mila was a kid. That was awkward for Ashton at the beginning. He was like 19 and she was like 14 or 15."

2005

Kutcher left the show before its final season wrapped. Kunis told Elle that they two kept in touch after he left, though she still didn't consider anything romantic with her former co-star.

"We'd always kept in touch on like AIM ... so we always kept in touch since after '70s. We'd pop up on each other's thing and be like 'Hey, oh my god! How are you? How's life?' 'Like everything's good!' 'Great!' [I wasn't thinking about him romantically], no, not at all!"

In September, Kutcher married Demi Moore.

Kunis split from Macaulay Culkin, who she dated from 2002-2011. She told People that she wasn't sure the relationship would have been the same if she was older when they met.

"I don't know if I met him at 27 if it would have been a different relationship," she said. "We grew up together. You find a steady rock in your life and that's all you need. We have our ups and downs, but work through them."

In November, Moore and Kutcher announced that they were separating.

Kutcher broke the news on Twitter, writing, "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail."

January 2012

The two reunited at the Golden Globes. In an interview, Kunis said that she was instantly attracted to Kutcher, but didn't' realize it was him at first.

"I was looking around, and there was a really beautiful man from the back," she told Marc Maron on his podcast. "I was literally like, 'Oh, he's kinda hot.' ... And then he turned around, and I was like, 'Oh, my God, it's Kutch.' I thought it was the weirdest thing that I was checking this guy out, and it was someone that I had known forever."

Insider reports that after the show, Kutcher invited Kunis to a housewarming party in the Hollywood Hills, where they shared their very first off-screen kiss.

"I think I was smoking cigarettes at the time, and I was still a smoker," Kutcher told Elle. "And she had quit smoking and she was like, she wanted me to like shotgun a cigarette smoke so she could breathe it in and I was like, 'All right.' And I started doing this. And gradually through the night, it got closer and closer and closer ... It was kind of obvious that things were happening."

Kunis said that life started to imitate art when the two of them started hooking up. She told Maron that they were living out their films No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits.

"It was the first time ever that I ever slept over at a guy's house since becoming single. He didn't let me leave. At two in the morning, I was like 'I'm going to call an Uber.' And he was like, 'You're crazy' and I was like, 'BYE.' When I was single, I was so adamant about never staying at a guy's house, that I was like peacing out. And he was like, 'You're not leaving.' And that was the first time [I didn't,]" she said. "I did a movie called Friends With Benefits. He did a movie that was very similar called No Strings Attached. We lived our movies out. We were just like, let's just hook up. Let's have fun. We're both single. We both trust each other. Everything's great."

April 2012

The two move in together.

"I was like, you know what, I actually care about you. I don't want to mess anything up so I'm just going to walk away before it becomes too much," she told Maron. "And he was like, 'Got it.' And the next day, he showed up to my house and he was like, 'Move in with me' and I said, 'OK.'"

August 2012

Kunis notes that she is starting to think about having a family.

"Listen, in five years I do hope to have a family, and, you know, who knows?" Kunis told Interview. "I've always been a big proponent of not working for the sake of working, because I don't want to work for the rest of my life — I want to live."

And it just seems like everything went amazing. And I know that something probably didn't go amazing, but she never tells ... it's unbelievable. She's incredible."

July 2015

The couple officially got married on July 4. Kunis explained that she hadn't ever considered marriage before. She added that the Supreme Court's decision to recognize same-sex marriage helped her change her mind.

"Commitment sounded great, but I didn't believe in marriage," Kunis told Elle. "I grew up in West Hollywood, and my brother has reminded me that when I was like 12, I said, 'When gay people can get married, then I'll get married.' I was ahead of my time. The Supreme Court decision [on same-sex marriage came down], and that's when Ashton and I got married."

Kunis reportedly purchased their wedding bands on Etsy and the two honeymoon in an RV with stops in Yosemite National Park and Napa Valley.

It's ... not great.

"Eight hours into our RV trip ... our air conditioner breaks in Bakersfield in 110-degree weather," she said during a stop on The Tonight Show. "We almost died on the side of the road when Apple Maps took us on a road ... It was a fire road on the side of a mountain. We all had to jump out of the vehicle and walk like, three miles while my father-in-law drove the van and Ashton navigated him over massive boulders because there had just been a massive flood. Guys, this was like, day two."

March 2020

Kunis opened up about parenting during the pandemic on the Teach Me Something New podcast.

"We're very goofy parents when it comes to our children, but that doesn't [mean we] have skill," she said. "I think that's just [us] being idiots. We're very comfortable with ourselves acting a fool at home, but maybe that comes from the idea of being comfortable in your own body, and in your own skin, and in your mind and not having a fear of making a fool of yourself."

February 2021

Kunis and Kutcher appeared in a hilarious Super Bowl ad for Cheetos, and we can't stop watching it. During the ad, Kutcher asks Kunis if she stole his Cheetos — which, she obviously did, given the infamous Cheetos dust on her fingers and mouth. But then the "It Wasn't Me" singer Shaggy appears and tells her to tell him it wasn't her. Kutcher then sings all of the places he caught Kunis snacking on his Cheetos.

During an appearance on Dax Shepherd's podcast, Armchair Expert, the husband-and-wife duo found themselves in hot water after revealing their children's bathing schedule.

"I didn't have hot water growing up as a child, so I didn't shower much anyway. But when I had children, I also didn't wash them every day," Kunis said. "I wasn't that parent that bathed my newborns — ever." Kutcher added, "Now, here's the thing, if you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there's no point."

Of course, the pair wasted no time joking about the backlash they received for the comments on social media, sharing a hilarious video on Instagram detailing bathtime in the Kunis-Kutcher household. "You're putting water on the children? Are you trying to melt them? Are you trying to injure them with water? This is ridiculous! What's going on?" Kutcher jokingly shouted in the video.

Just weeks later, Kutcher shared in an Instagram post that the couple had hit their goal, raising more than $30 million in the process. "We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support," the actor captioned his post. "And while this is far from a solution for the problem, our collective effort will provide a softer landing for so many people as they forge ahead into their future of uncertainty."

Kunis and Kutcher returned to their That '70s Show roots when filming a guest appearance on the new Netflix series spin-off, That '90s Show. He added that he and Kunis debated whether they would return to the show, revealing, "Mila and I were contemplating it. We thought, 'Listen, we're only in the position that we're in because of that show, so let's just go back and do this. We just went back and had fun for a week. It was so random and fun," he said.

I showed up drunk at her house, at like 2 in the morning, and I just started screaming, 'You and tequila make me crazy.' " He continued, "And I told her I love her, and she's like, 'Don't say it if you don't mean it. Are you gonna love me in the morning when you wake up from this hangover?"

He continued, "I woke up the next morning and said, 'I still love you.'"
