Emily Blunt Said She Dressed "Like a Teenage Boy" Before Starring in 'The Devil Wears Prada'

Besides eternally quotable one-liners, one of Meryl Streep's most iconic characters, and a bevy of meme-worthy moments, The Devil Wears Prada also gave us endless fashion inspiration — and as it turns out, the iconic film didn't just impact the style senses of the fans. Emily Blunt recently admitted that the movie taught her everything she knows about fashion.

“I didn’t know enough in any way about the fashion industry going into that movie," she revealed on an appearance of Variety's Know Their Lines segment, during which she was quizzed on her previous projects. “I think I’d just been dressing like a teenage boy until that happened, and I learned a lot.”

In the flick, Blunt played fashion assistant Emily at the fictional fashion magazine "Runway," helmed by the tyrannical Miranda Priestly. Blunt said that the role not only opened her eyes to the ins and outs of the fashion industry, but also helped her develop her own personal sense of style.

"I didn't quite realize how intense it was, and friends of mine who've worked in the fashion industry say that that film managed to capture that," she continued, before adding that the experience was "a voyage of discovery in every way. Not just about the industry itself but about style and the art of it and how important it is.”

This isn't the first time Blunt or her co-stars have revisited the making of the early 2000s film. Earlier this year, Blunt detailed her experience working with Streep, calling it "terrifying."

“She’s amazing and was slightly terrifying on that film," she said during an episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors series. "But it made her so miserable, playing Miranda,"

Streep herself admitted that playing the intimidating editor was "one of the first times" she tried method acting. “I was so depressed!” she said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that reunited the cast in honor of the movie's 15th anniversary. Anne Hathaway also recalled playing style-amateur-turned-star-assistant Andy Sachs. “It spoke to me. It made me feel," Hathaway told EW. "It was about a subject that I take very seriously, but in such a wonderfully joyful and lighthearted way.”
