King Charles Will Undergo Treatment for an Enlarged Prostate

After news of Kate Middleton's hospitalization broke, the royal family also shared that King Charles is scheduled to undergo treatment for an enlarged prostate. The move may be head-scratching for royal fans who are more accustomed to the Firm keeping things under wraps, but the palace notes that Charles wanted to share his diagnosis and treatment to encourage men everywhere who might be experiencing similar symptoms to get checked. Charles is 75 years old. The American Cancer Society advises that men get annual prostate checks after age 50 and that individuals with a family history of prostate cancer start getting annual checkups at age 45.

"In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate," Buckingham Palace announced in a statement on Wednesday, as reported by People. "His Majesty's condition is benign, and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure."

The Palace also noted that Charles's schedule would be put on hold, adding, "The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation." A source close to the royals told People that "Charles will be capable of fulfilling his constitutional requirements and duties during this time."

Earlier today, Buckingham Palace released a statement regarding Kate Middleton's recovery after a planned abdominal surgery. The palace also shared that Kate's surgery was not related to cancer.

"The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery," a statement read. "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

"The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private," the statement continued. "Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologize to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
