This is my first winter in Maryland where I’ve needed to break out my heavyweight coats, sweaters, and cardigans. I’d say that for the last four years, I’ve gotten away with lightweight cashmere sweaters, midweight puffer jackets, and cardigans that could double as a long-sleeve shirt. But now that there’s snow on the ground and temperatures are in the low 20s, I need a restock on some heavier winter essentials.
I decided to start by overhauling my cardigan collection because I reach for one daily, but my current go-to for lounging is paper-thin. I scrolled through Amazon and came across Lillusory’s Chunky-Knit Open-Front Cardigan, a thick and snuggly option that’s suitable for chilly temps. It was an immediate add to cart, and after wearing it every day for the last week, I’m going back for all 18 colors.
The midi, calf-length cardigan comes in neutrals like gray, black, and navy, plus more trendy pink and red, and sizes range from S to XL. It features a tightly knitted waffle-weave texture, ribbed finishings at the cuff and hem, drop shoulders for a relaxed fit, and a lapel-like collar for some visual interest. The cardigan also has side-seam pockets on both hips and an oversized fit, making it great for layering over long-sleeve tops.

I was looking for a versatile, blanket-like style I could just throw on over loungewear or dress up as needed, and this Lillusory option checked all boxes. While I primarily wear this open-front cardigan for lounging at home, the rolled lapel, beautiful draping, and functional pockets make it chic enough to throw over a blouse, jeans, and booties for a night out on the town. It offers a good amount of warmth on its own in low temperatures, but I’d still recommend layering under a wool trench coat. I haven’t taken it off since it arrived — it’s even comfortable enough to nap in thanks to its thick, super soft fabric that’s non-irritating to the skin.
As with any knitted piece, the threads can snag if you’re not careful, so try to be mindful of your surroundings. Though I was nervous it may start to pill, I made sure to wash it before wear. To my surprise, it held up well after a gentle cycle in the washing machine and air drying.
