In this new weekly feature, InStyle's Fashion News Director Eric Wilson shares his favorite fashion moment of the week, and explains how it could shape styles to come. Look for it on What's Right Now every Friday.

The Moment: Calvin Klein Collection's pre-fall fashion show, Thursday, December 4 at the company showroom in New York City.

In his latest collection, Francisco Costa, women’s creative director at Calvin Klein, went in an unexpectedly cozy direction during a bustling start to the pre-fall fashion show season. (While you’re shopping for presents, we’re shopping for next year’s trends.)

Why It's a Wow: Oversize cashmere and wool coats worn over lightweight knit dresses that grazed the floor suggested an off-handed manner of dressing, as if the models, with their hands tucked into their long felt sleeves, were dashing out into the cold to fetch the paper. Adding to this impression, and making the look a moment of the week: the fuzzy gray house slippers that were an amusing touch, and all about ease.

“The spirit of the collection represented a return to innocence,” Costa told me. He was inspired by the nostalgic photographs of Mike Kelley, the late conceptual artist whose work is the subject of a retrospective that recently opened at MoMA PS1 in New York's Long Island City.

“The proportions were based on children’s clothes, such as the long and short double-breasted coats with oversize buttons,” Costa said. “There was also a coziness and ease to the silhouettes, which carried over to the shoes, like the effortless pony slippers.”
