Rachel Bilson is opening up about her experience with pregnancy loss for the first time. During Monday’s episode of her podcast, Broad Ideas, the actress revealed that she suffered multiple miscarriages throughout her life before welcoming her daughter, Briar Rose, in 2014.

“It's one of the biggest things I talk about with pregnancy and having babies. I've had miscarriages so I've had losses,” Bilson said, adding that “they were early on” and she “never carried” the babies for long.

The actress — who discussed the topic with her co-host Olivia Allen and their guest Libby Weintraub, the author of She Was Born: Words on Loss and Liberation — later added that she felt the need to “roll with the punches” during pregnancy because of how quickly things can change.

"With birth, I even remember going into [it saying], 'I'm open to whatever,'” she said. “What plans can you make when it's really not up to you? I always knew I was going to go to a hospital and would not try a home birth.”

Rachel eventually went on to welcome her now-8-year-old daughter Briar in Oct. 2014 with her ex, Hayden Christensen. The couple dated for 10 years before eventually calling it quits in 2017.

While Bilson tends to keep her daughter out of the public eye, she did open up about motherhood in 2019 when speaking to SheKnows, where she explained that having a daughter has given her life “purpose.”

“You just feel like — you really are living a life with a purpose,” Bilson said at the time. “Setting an example for her is the most important. So, in that, it’s like every move you make you know is being watched, so you have to consider things a little more carefully."
