I grew up in the hair salon. It was a right of passage to get a bi-monthly silk press, but as I got older it no longer meshed with my lifestyle. I knew I needed a style that required less maintenance and completely eliminated the need for detangling, and the solution was locing my hair. I’ve been loc’d for nearly three years and all I have to do is wash, occasionally condition, and oil my scalp. I’ve tested an array of oils in pursuit of the perfect scalp oil and the one I keep coming back to is Tropic Isle Living’s Strong Roots Red Pimento Hair Growth Oil.

It features the oil from the pimento berry which is rich in antioxidants, and removes impurities from the scalp that may slow down growth. It also contains castor oil that promotes hair growth and improves skin texture. In a previous interview, certified trichologist and colorist Bridgette Hill told InStyle that castor oil is a fatty acid, which “assists with cultivating the necessary environment (when properly used) to nurture and support healthy hair follicles and fibers. It’s great for all hair types but is most ideal for nourishing the scalp when wearing protective styles.

A huge component of loc maintenance is scalp health. With my scalp constantly being exposed to the elements, I’m more prone to flakes, dryness, and irritation. And even more so after retightening my locs. But my secret to keeping my scalp and strands in tip-top shape is by applying Tropic Isle Living’s hair oil. I fill a spray bottle with a water-diluted mixture of the pimento oil, shake it up, and spray it all over my hair, focusing on my scalp. I’ll apply the oil straight to my scalp if I’ve just got a retightening or after I’ve just washed my hair and massage it into my scalp and then run along the length to the ends.

I’ve noticed that with continuous use over the last year, my new growth is a lot thicker and stronger, so I’m not experiencing as much breakage at the root. And while I’m not actively trying to grow my hair longer, I have noticed that by the time I go to retighten my new growth it’s grown at least an inch in just four weeks when it used to be half that. It also immediately remedies my dry, itchy scalp, and the minty tingling feeling upon contact with the scalp has been great for soothing my scalp after retightening or tight styling. And though I have locs, my sister and niece have also loved using this oil for similar concerns on their curls and braided styles.
