It wouldn't be a *checks calendar* Friday if we weren't being inundated with a new viral TikTok fashion trend. Fortunately, the Tomato Girl aesthetic, TikTok's latest style obsession with over 3.7 million views, is perfect for summer. Unlike Coastal Cowgirl or Barbiecore, Tomato Girl is more of a vibe than a trend that calls for specific clothes or a strict color palette. Read on to learn how to dress like a Tomato Girl (spoiler alert: You don't need to wear bright red), and see what other produce-forward aesthetics we think might take over the internet next.
What Is the Tomato Girl Aesthetic?
The Tomato Girl aesthetic, surprisingly, has very little to do with the fruit itself, and more to do with the culture we most closely associate with fresh, bursting tomatoes. In fact, a glance at the Tomato Girl hashtag on TikTok will show you as many, if not more, recipes for Mediterranean stews bursting with fresh tomatoes than outfits to replicate.
The retro, dreamy vibe pulls inspiration from the sights you might see on a vacay in a quaint village on the Italian coast: sun-warmed cobblestones, scoops of gelato eaten outside a charming terracotta cafe, blue and white tile mosaics, and so on. The retro vibe is so decidedly and specifically Mediterranean that you'd be forgiven for wondering if the tomato girlies aren't just giving Amalfi Coast dressing a seasonal rebrand.
Since this aesthetic is inspired by coastal living (or, more accurately, a Pinterest-perfect idea of coastal living) many of the clothes that fit the Tomato Girl bill have already been trending. Lightweight sun dresses, delicately embroidered linen separates, raffia accessories, and vintage gold jewelry all fit comfortably under the Tomato Girl umbrella (which we assume is a striped beach umbrella). Also in play: crochet, silk scarves, ditzy florals, and gingham. While there's no strict color palette, sun-warmed earth tones, pottery-inspired blues and whites, and soft reds are commonly spotted in Tomato Girl aesthetic posts.
Not charmed by the Tomato Girl vibe? Don't worry. We're certain another swoon-worthy aesthetic will pop up in the weeks to come. In the meantime, we've rounded (and dreamed) up a few more foodie-inspired trends for any fashion girlies with tomato allergies.
Potato Girl Aesthetic
A round of applause for Elle Fanning, please. On Wednesday, July 6, Fanning shared a 'fit on her Instagram Stories cheekily captioned "Potato Girl Summer." The look, featuring lightweight summer layers in creamy linen, was definitely potato-colored, minus the lumpy starch of it all. Fanning's wide-leg trousers, stripped button-down, and full-length trench were luxe, tailored, and decadent. They also got us thinking about what foods might usurp "hot" next when it comes to declaring summer the season of the *pick a food* girl.
Lemon Girl Aesthetic
Romantic and a bit tart, the lemon girl aesthetic could definitely be the next one to take off. Picture it: the vibe is coastal so you can recycle any Almafi Coast, Coastal Cowgirl, or even Farmcore aesthetic pieces you've already got on hand. While you're at it, why not throw in a lemon-printed sundress or wrap skirt?
Cherry Girl Aesthetic
We know what you're thinking: How is a Cherry Girl summer different than a Tomato Girl summer? For starters, we envision Cherry Girls sticking basic wardrobe staples in shades of cherry red (see: Hailey Bieber). Their summer go-tos would probably include micro-bikinis, slip dresses, and cut-off jean shorts.
