Even if you don’t get dressed up on Halloween, it’s always fun to scroll through social media and see what other people dress up as year after year. And although it’s always a good time to see friends’ costumes, I know I’m not the only one who will be refreshing Instagram on October 31 to judge which celebrity Halloween costumes of 2023 are going to make the best-of lists.
The great news is that, thanks to the brilliance of stylists, we have some clues as to what the stars might wear this spooky season. Similar to how style experts make educated guesses regarding what a celebrity will wear on a red carpet, fashion stylists can predict their Halloween costumes based on a famous person’s individual style, past picks, and, of course, pop culture influences. For example, celebrity stylist Soneca Guadara tells InStyle there’s no doubt in her mind Barbie and Ken costumes will reign supreme for Halloween 2023, thanks to the Barbie movie release and booming Barbiecore trend.
“The fact that the movie has taken over by storm, choosing from an array of different iconic Barbie and Ken Looks will be on top of the list of what to wear this Halloween,” Guadara says. However, if the fashion doll’s vibrant color palette doesn’t fit the mood, Guadara anticipates the creepy-kooky, all-black-everything attire of Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams will make a statement this year as well. She also suspects celebs will draw inspiration from other cinematic hits like The Little Mermaid and Top Gun: Maverick, as well as characters from popular streaming series, like Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte.
We dug a little deeper and asked eight celebrity stylists, Guadara included, to predict the celebrity Halloween costumes for 2023 among their current, past, and wish-list clients.
Heidi Klum as Trinity in 'The Matrix'
“Heidi Klum said her [giant worm] outfit last year left her feeling ‘claustrophobic.’ With the current trend of augmented reality and AI getting so much press, Heidi might enter the matrix.” — Kim Appelt, celebrity fashion stylist and author of Style for EveryBODY
Camille Kostek and Rob Gronkowski as Barbie and Ken
“Camille and Gronk make the ultimate Barbie and Ken not just physically, but also style-wise. They crushed it on the Barbie premiere carpet, so it’s only right to serve us another rendition. For Halloween, I can see her in the typical pink plaid midi A-line dress and Barbie bangs and him in a denim look shirtless.” — Danielle O'Connell, celebrity stylist of Danielle & Alix
Keke Palmer as Tina Turner
“I can see Keke Palmer, whom I’ve previously worked with for many years, nailing her unique rendition of Tina Turner. That would take my breath away visually, not to mention her skill at doing spot-on music icon impersonations.” — Mickey Freeman, celebrity stylist
Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes as 'Yellowstone'’s Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler
“I can see Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes dressing up as Beth and Rip. They’re a powerhouse couple — the couple who wants to have an edge about them.” — Nina Vargas, celebrity business strategist, stylist, and creator
Sophia Richie Grainge as Jane Birkin
“A trend I’m forecasting is tribute looks. I see certain celebs paying homage to their muses and icons. While Sofia Richie Grainge, who I recently had the pleasure of working with on a Who What Wear cover, cites Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as her ultimate style muse, I can see her repping an iconic, incredibly chic Jane Birkin look. Or, if Sofia and her new hub want to make a united front, I see Ferris and Sloane [from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off]. How can you resist that fringe jacket and white boots? — Carly Landig, celebrity stylist
Paris Hilton as Malibu Barbie
“I’m pretty sure everyone is going to be doing a version of the massive box office hit Barbie. Which one, is the question? Paris Hilton will probably be Malibu Barbie because she is the OG celeb Barbie girl!” — Christina Stein, personal stylist and style therapist
Tiffany Haddish as Betty Boop
“Recently, I had the opportunity to style actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish, and based on her style and personality, I can see her dressing up for Halloween as none other than the legendary cartoon Betty Boop.” — Guadara
Paige Desorbo and Craig Canover as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson
“Alix and I can totally see them bringing the edge. We would love to see Paige with big blonde hair and really lean into the Pam Anderson vibe and Craig with tattoos — a vision! The accessories and glam will be crucial to make this vision a reality.” — O'Connell
Dylan Sprouse as Ken
“Dylan Sprouse, whom I’ve also worked with previously, [is] a real-life Ken doll. Combined with his boyish good looks and marrying a real-life Barbie — supermodel Barbara Palvin — it's a no-brainer.” — Freeman
Beyoncé as Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid'
“Beyoncé and her family have consistently stunned with their creative and coordinated Halloween costumes! From iconic music group outfits to movie characters, their costumes are well thought-out and executed with flair. With the Mermaidcore trend this summer, Beyonce as Ariel would be perfect, and Jay Z as King Triton or Prince Eric, an epic combo. And how cute would her kids be as Sabastian, Flounder, and Scuttle!” — Appelt
