While everyone has a different body type and their own feelings on what they'd like to reveal, take a chance on something new this swim season. Swimsuits For All

What We Love
  • The simple cut with the stylish fringe addition.

What We Don’t Love
  • The tummy control aspect is fake advertising.

Simplistic in style, this bathing suit from Swim 365 will still turn heads with the frilly fringe detail at the top of the swimwear. When you slip on this one-piece, you’ll immediately notice the ruched mesh lining of the swimwear that provides extra compression in the briefs portion of the suit. The swimsuit is designed with the same stretchy nylon material as the suit, guaranteeing that the fabric stays in top condition after chlorine, salt water, and rinse cycles. Swim 365 advertises a “tummy control” feature in this bathing suit that is supposed to be slimming. In my opinion, all the extra tight material does is make the waist area feel more compressed in an uncomfortable way. However, it does guarantee that my stomach will stay put and won’t flop around when I trot down the beach—I don’t know how Pamela does it.

Almost all bathing suits on this list have smaller waist measurements than to add compression to the stomach area, except for the Good American Always Fits Monokini and the Swimsuit for All Shimmer Double Ring One Piece. Size up if you like a loose fit, every body type is different, and with plus-size people, we all carry fat differently, so check your waist and hip measurements to ensure the suit is long and wide enough. This fringe moment can quickly become a boho look by adding a few accessories. To complete the beach outfit, style this suit with a cute crochet cover-up, some round sunnies, a floppy hat, and flat espadrilles shoes.

What We Love
  • This suit is a subtly sexy choice.

What We Don't Love
  • There isn't enough color variety for larger sizes.

The entire cut of the bathing suit creates a sexy appeal with the halter straps that cross over breasts to give them an extra lift and the lining under the cups that generate the illusion of an hourglass figure. Keyhole necklines make boobs of all sizes look fantastic. That's a very blanketed statement, but you'll see what I mean when you put on this front cross one-piece and see your chest framed in the circle space. This suit's thick adjustable straps lay on shoulders without getting too tight, even when loosened all the way. Side spillage won't be a problem with this one-piece with extra fabric lining that covers beasts and side rolls comfortably and the added compression from the halter portion that secures everything.

If you're anti-padding, the added material in the cups is removable. This style seemingly has endless color and pattern options with over twenty bright shades, so you'll have a hard time choosing. If you can't decide between two colors, do yourself a favor and get them both because it's always a good idea to have a backup that you know works. Unfortunately, the largest sizes are often out of stock in multiple colors, so if you see one you like, grab it up before it's gone. This swimsuit fits true to size and has a little tightening in the waist which is common with one-pieces, especially those with tummy-control compression.

Best Splurge

Anne Cole One Piece Swimsuit

Anne Cole Center Front Cutout One Piece Swimsuit

Anne Cole

What We Love
  • The vibrant pattern isn’t overwhelming.

What We Don’t Love
  • The waist measurements are skewed too small.

Floral patterns typically find their way onto bathing suits of all types, but I think they’re rarely done well on fat bodies. One too many misplaced flowers, and I feel less spring-influenced and more like a half-hazard garden. This cutout one-piece from Anne Cole is an exception to this sentiment, with the intentionally placed pattern that keeps the flowers looking seamless. A scoop neckline in the front and back of this one-piece makes it easy to tan without awkward tan lines. However, the windowing of fabric down the middle of the chest might leave some square-like marks after sunbathing.

As you wear this swimsuit, the nylon and spandex material will stretch to your body, making it more comfortable with each wear. The adjustable back straps are thick and connected with two circle attachments that add durability to the bathing suit, keeping the straps from twisting or rolling down your shoulders. This swimsuit is another option with padding in the cups, but thankfully it’s removable. If you’re unsure of your size, Anne Cole’s website has a virtual measurement guide with a graphic of someone explaining precisely how to measure yourself. Get your measurements first because one downside to this bathing suit is that the size is very skewed in the waist, even more so than other options on this list.

What We Love
  • It’s stylish enough to wear as a bodysuit.

What We Don’t Love
  • The swimsuit could have more butt coverage.

Retailers have gotten the memo: not every plus-size black swimsuit needs to look basic. These days swimwear is expanding in more ways than just sizing. Meet.Curve offers a plethora of stylish and inclusive swimwear pieces like this crossover one-piece that pushes breasts and side rolls together for a smooth look. The cross-front detail that transforms into a square back is what sold me. If you are searching for the best swimsuits for big boobs, this one checks all the boxes. It held up my breasts through various pool activities and made me wish there were more colors.

With a peep of skin in the middle, this swimsuit is equal parts elegant and sexy with a touch of vintage vibes. The three stripes of mesh paneling go all around the stomach, so wear sunscreen at these exposed bits, or you'll end up with a striped tan. The bottom half of this one-piece has a cheeky cut that can sometimes ride up, revealing more skin than you probably want.

What We Love
  • The ultra-sexy style will certainly turn heads.

What We Don't Love
  • It won't be very supportive.

Want to make an impression at the beach? Look no further than this strapless one-piece from Good American. We were initially attracted to the bright pink color (again, hello Barbiecore!), but then we fell in love with the simple, sexy tube top shape. Sure, it won't be very supportive — it compresses and has padding, though — and we wouldn't recommend actually swimming in it, but it will look great with a sarong at the beachside bar on your next vacation. We love the high-leg that elongates your figure, too, accentuating all the right things. We recommend checking out the rest of Good American's swimsuits, which all go up to 5XL, for more figure-flattering styles.

What We Love
  • The deep V still offers plenty of support, thanks to the removable pads.

What We Don't Love
  • The metal V shifts sometimes.

Yes, another sexy suit. We love this deeply plunging swimsuit, which comes in multiple patterns, such as fun florals or a sultry animal print, and plain black, for its impeccable fit. Cinching in the waist, while also supporting your breasts, the one-piece looks flattering on nearly every body type. It has removable pads, allowing you to customize your support, and comes fully lined, so you'll never have to worry about too thin fabric that shows everything when wet. Just be aware that the metal V — a fun detail that adds a little personality to the one-piece — can shift a bit. But it's easy to move back into place, and we think it's a minor flaw, considering how great the suit itself fits.

Parade

What We Love
  • This style comes in various colors.

What We Don’t Love
  • There’s not a lot of bust support.

Plus-size bikinis are definitely having their moment; however, monokinis have been on the rise as a middle ground between bikinis and one-pieces, and we’re here for the style evolution. Sometimes you need a mix of both to step out of your comfort zone. Maybe you’re not quite ready for a bikini but want something just as sexy, that’s where this Parade monokini comes in. It comes in five different standout colors to choose from, including black, maroon, pink, orange, and blue. We love the stretchy sustainable material that feels very comfortable to the touch and moves with your body. It provides a subtle smoothing effect, too.

Because of the shape of the top, larger busts might not find it offers enough coverage or support. But the halter will ensure you won't fall out of it. We imagine wearing this with a pair of shorts, too, not just as a bathing suit.

What We Love
  • The shimmering material is too good to pass up.

What We Don’t Love
  • The drawstring strapping throughout loosens easily.

Another double-take one-piece moment, but make it Barbiecore! Styles like these prove that one-pieces can match the sexiness of a bikini. And when you add bold colors, like this vibrant pink, we're ready to spend all our money. Swimsuits for All has had the back of plus-size folks for a couple of decades now, with the brand focusing more heavily on extended sizes in 2014 after another plus-size company acquired it. Not all their styles are winners, but this one takes the cake with exposed cut-outs in the front and back that are cinched by a drawstring (make sure you double-knot it to keep it tight). High waist brief bottoms are a little cheeky in the back but stay in place throughout your wear.

Anyone who dislikes padding in swimsuits will be pleased to know that you can remove the padding on this swimsuit. If you’re still on the fence about the coverage with this swimsuit, heed plus-size influencer and swimsuit aficionado Danyelle Miller’s words. “You don’t have to look a certain way to pull off any item. It’s about having fun in the sun, not worrying about what you’re wearing all day being uncomfortable,” she says.

Summersalt

What We Love
  • It's simple, stylish, and comfortable.

What We Don't Love
  • The straps don't offer as much support.

The color blocking on this one-piece is why it remains one of Summersalt's best-selling swimsuits and a favorite of writer Arielle Bines. Traditional cut bathing suits don't have to be boring and that's where this brand excels. This style comes in eight colors featuring five color-blocked options with warm and cool-toned shades that work for varying fashion tastes. The simplistic cut embraces different body types with an open back that lets your skin get some sun.

If you're on the taller end and are looking for the best long torso swimsuits, this brand offers a "Long Torso" option that adds nearly two extra inches in length. Content creator Francesca Perks often reaches for styles like these with a 90's silhouette that hugs the body in the right ways, giving off supermodel vibes a-la the Swim Issue of Sports Illustrated. The thinner straps won't offer as much support as other choices, but thanks to the solid compression, we think you'll feel secure in it anyways.

What We Love
  • The high neck can be unbuttoned to show off more skin at any time, making it particularly versatile.

What We Don't Love
  • The sizing can be tricky to figure out.

The high-neck stood out to us on this swimsuit because not only does it look particularly chic, but it also can be unbuttoned to show off some more skin, if you'd like. Choose between either a smooth fabric or ribbed, both of which come in numerous colors, like punchy reds and deep blues. The super stretchy fabric will fell comfortable for all day wear, yet you can actually swim in it. The brand offers a long torso version, too, for anyone with a torso longer than 30 inches. However, it might be tough to figure out what size to buy, because some say the long torso version is really long. We recommend looking at the size guide before purchasing.

What We Love
  • The modest coverage still looks stylish.

What We Don’t Love
  • There isn't as much breast support as other choices.

This one-piece is for you if you need something that covers a little bit more, while still showing off your figure. The puffy, cap sleeves cinch at the hem, hugging your arm (without feeling too tight), preventing them from rolling into your armpits. You'll never need to pull them down when you dive into the pool or raise your arms. This suit fits true to size, but because it is wireless, it doesn't have quite as much support for the breasts as other choices. However, that does mean there will be no tightness in the waist or underboob, and the stylistic banding under the chest accentuates your figure with the mesh lining molding to your body. Unfortunately, this one has padding that can’t be removed (sigh).

What We Love
  • The strapless top stays compressive without discomfort.

What We Don’t Love
  • Taller folks will need to size up, so your bottom stays covered.

Anytime I wear strapless bathing suits (or any strapless clothing really) I’m counting down the moments until gravity wins. One second you’re playing some form of beach volleyball or just lounging by a pool, and the next, you’re flashing some random lifeguard. I’ve tried my fair share of strapless bathing suits and have failed too many times by tops that dig into the top half of my body, causing an insane amount of spillage over the fabric. Any preconceived idea about bandeau options should leave your head because this is the ONE. Kona Sol somehow put my mind at ease with this high-coverage option with removable straps, just in case. The top of this one-piece won’t compress too tight that it leaves marks, and it comes up high enough to keep side spillage at bay and stays up even through jumping jacks. It’s essential to do a little bounce test.

Make sure to double up on the sunscreen to cover your exposed skin since a lot of it will be on display. This cut is perfect for sunbathing since the style is low on the shoulder, and there will be no straps. Tip from Alexis: Mix some of the Fenty Beauty Lava Body Luminizer into your favorite water-based body lotions with SPF (helps it spread) for a gentle glow that’ll give you a sunkissed look before you even hit the beach. The gingham pattern is fun and frilly with the ruffle fabric that gives modern 50’s vibes, like the original Barbie Doll (except this one shows off your butt better). I rarely say this, but size down with this swim style to ensure a tight fit up top. Thankfully there’s no “tummy control” aspect, so there’s a good amount of space in the stomach area. As a heads up, the bottoms are a bit high-waisted, so make sure you use a bikini trimmer if you don’t want any hair peaking through.

Size: XS-6W | Colors: Navy blue gingham | Material: Nylon, Polyester, and spandex

Best Rashguard

Lands' End Long Sleeve One Piece Swimsuit

Lands' End

What We Love
  • The full-coverage look is made with durable material that lasts.

What We Don't Love
  • It's challenging to take off.

Rashguards are an outer layer for surfers and anyone often in the water and sun. This one-piece swimwear technically isn't a rash guard, but it works just as well for a full coverage option that protects you from the sun and any water-like activity you're doing. This option from Lands' End skips the extra layer and allows you to wear this long sleeve as a swimsuit without needing a bathing suit underneath. The zipper is very long and conveniently trails down the front half of the suit, so it's easy to get on.

However, it's not easy to get off. It can be difficult to take off when wet or sticky with sweat. I've fully sat in the house with this suit on, waiting to dry because I couldn't be bothered to try and pull myself out of the suit. Thankfully it's never ripped, partially because of the LYCRA spandex that, according to Lands 'End, "is supposed to last up to 10 times longer than other spandex," and I have to agree. I got this suit in the black color back when I was afraid to wear color, but the deep sea navy/lemon lime mix makes a better addition to my colorful swimwear, and I'm going to pick up another one during one of the many sales Lands' End has.

What We Love
  • The flattering halter top can also be styled as a strapless piece for versatility.

What We Don't Love
  • It only comes in floral patterns.

We love the retro style of this halter one-piece from ethical, women-owned brand Kitty And Vibe. With UPF 50, the suit has medium coverage in the back with ruching across the tummy for a flattering fit, plus, not to mention, a convertible halter. Wear it as the intended halter or take the tie off for a strapless suit. Because the suit has an underwire, it will support the gals enough to wear it without a strap. You can even choose between regular and long torso lengths, catering to the taller folks among us. We love the two charming florals offered, but we wish it came in solid colors, too, since not everyone loves a floral.

What We Love
  • The sexy style still keeps you covered.

What We Don't Love
  • It only comes in black.

Anyone looking for full-coverage swimwear that isn't a rashguard or too covered —basically, for anyone looking for something equally as sexy as a bikini with maybe a little less skin showing — we'd like to introduce you to this swim dress from Miraclesuit. Not only does it have shapewear-like compression for a smoother midsection, it also has soft cups and wireless support, keeping everything in place. The plunging neckline and halter closure provide subtle, sexy cleavage, while the short skirt over the bottom will give hide any self-conscious areas. We wish it came in more colors than black, though, but at least black is super versatile.

Size: 16W-24W | Colors: 1 | Material: Nylon, spandex

What to Keep in Mind

Fabric

Swimsuit fabric plays a huge role in comfort and fit. It needs to be stretchy, conform to the body, and dry fast, yet maintain its color and shape in the water. A popular combo for swimsuits is a polyester and elastane blend. Elastane is super stretchy, better known by its brand names of Spandex or Lycra, and polyester is durable, colorfast, and resistant to chlorine, so swimsuits stay vibrant. The Good American Always Fits Monokini consists of polyester and elastane, which helps keep the full array of colors bright, even through various washes. Nylon is another popular choice because of its strength, but it does pill over time, pilling little fuzzies up to the surface. Almost every option on this list has Nylon in the material mix, like the Anne Cole Center Front Cutout One Piece Swimsuit and the Swim 365 Fringe One-Piece, because of its ability to keep swimwear in shape without stretching out too much. If pilling does happen, there are a few hacks online involving razors or you can use a fabric shaver.

Coverage

When shopping for swimwear online, bear in mind what or how much you're comfortable with showing and if want a full-coverage swimsuit or one that shows a little more skin. Thicker straps can offer more support for larger busts, and so can a one-piece with an underwire or a halter top to secure them. The Daci Front Cross Tummy Control Keyhole Swimwear has a halter shape that leaves arms free from straggling straps and lifts boobs together and up. If you're looking for more coverage, try a rashguard option like the Lands' End Chlorine Resistant Zip Front Long Sleeve Tugless Sporty One Piece Swimsuit or a one-piece with a high neck and sleeves like the Torrid Active Wireless Scoop Back One Piece Swimsuit.

Your Questions, Answered

How do I know what the right size is for me?

Start with your dress size to get an understanding of your size range. Knowing your measurements can also help you hone in on the stores you're targeting since, unfortunately, unless they are plus-size stores they may not carry past a 2X (some haven't even expanded to that range yet). To be even more accurate, use a measuring tape to record the size of your bust, waist, and hips to compare it against the brand's sizing chart. The size that is closest to your measurements is usually your true-to-size option. Remember that some styles will contain a "tummy control" option, which is a brand's way of alluding to a slimmer figure with intentional elastic and ruching around the waist. The results are bathing suits with smaller space for larger stomachs and the need for people to size up.

Is it better to size up or down in swimwear?

If compression is what you hope to nab in your swimwear, you may want to consider sizing down. Choosing to size up or down can depend on each brand's size guide and the swimsuit style you' want. Some swimwear brands will note if their models have sized down from their dress size for a better fit. Reading reviews can also help you understand the swimsuits' comfort level and whether adjusting from your typical size is necessary.

Why Shop With Us

Alexis Gaskin is the former commerce writer at InStyle covering beauty and fashion, with the latter focused on plus-size fashion and inclusive styles. Having been big her whole life she’s seen the ups and downs of shopping while fat, especially with swimwear. She searched through her collection of swimsuits and connected with various brands to personally test bathing suits through chlorine, salt water, and a lot of sweating. To make sure fellow fat shoppers have the best options, she spoke with plus-size influencers Danyelle Miller and Francesca Perks and got insight from writer Arielle Bines.
