I’ve long been under the assumption that your winter jacket is either warm or nice. Living in the Midwest for most of my life, I had a functional, it’s-below-freezing-outside puffer jacket, and I had a semi-warm but mostly stylish peacoat. The two-coat lifestyle was all well and good for a long time, but then I learned that you could have one that serves the function of both and decided it was time to rethink my coat closet. And this week, Chrissy Teigen might have just worn my favorite version of it.
The model and author stepped out in New York City this week wearing what can be best described as the chicest, most winter-ready bathrobe. Teigen’s camel-colored jacket featured a full-length hem, slightly puffy though totally oversized design, and hood. And while that might sound a bit casual (if not something you’d want to lounge in at home) it was also shockingly stylish thanks to a few standout details, including an elevated lapel, a tie belt that gave the giant coat a bit more figure, and a lustrous finish.

Varley Lanark Jacket
Her jacket immediately caught my attention because of how well it married functionality and fashion, something I long believed you could have only one of when it came to cold-weather dressing. The padded design, hood, and oversized nature made the piece winter-ready while the champagne-like color and collar gave it a truly elevated feel. As the rest of Teigen’s outfit proved, the robe-inspired coat works just as well with casual pieces (like her baseball cap) as it does dressed up (looking at you, black boots).
If you’re looking to be more thoughtful with your purchases or trying to make a whole winter wardrobe fit into a small closet, versatility is the name of the game, and this year stars have taught me that there’s a way to get everything you want in just one jacket. In addition to Teigen’s coat (my newest one-and-done winter obsession), Jennifer Lawrence recently wore a quilted puffer jacket that made me realize the winter staple doesn’t have to be so frumpy. Like Teigen’s piece, her coat relied on more dressed-up details — like a notched lapel and button front — to make the winter jacket something you could wear (and would want to wear) beyond a snowy morning.
Both stars have convinced me that my winter wardrobe could be a little less compartmentalized thanks to their pieces that blend cold-weather wearability with trending jacket styles. Find more looks inspired by Teigen’s robe-like winter jacket below.
