Dressing up in the winter is a struggle. I personally find it nearly impossible to want to leave the comfort and warmth of my favorite knit pieces, but for those instances I simply have to, I also can’t help but feel like most of my closet is useless. Everything without a full-length hem is automatically in the “No” pile, with my favorite mini dresses and skirts collecting dust until it’s warm enough for bare legs. But this week, Emma Stone reminded me that there’s a ridiculously easy hack that basically makes your entire closet winter-ready.
While in New York, the actress stepped out in a sophisticated tweed set from Louis Vuitton that was surprisingly sexy, too. The double-breasted black jacket featured a deep V-neck, satin lapels, and eye-catching gold buttons, while the matching tweed skirt had a seriously short hem. It was elegant but still youthful, and, to my surprise, perfect for winter thanks to one detail: those sheer black tights.

For a long time, I was (mistakenly) under the impression stockings served two purposes: to keep you warm and make a good outfit look drab. Stone’s look proved me wrong. The actress’s sheer black tights didn’t only provide warmth, but they added to the sexiness of her posh look, with the see-through undergarment allowing just the right amount of skin to show through. What’s more, they made her monochromatic, all-black ‘fit feel a little less harsh, breaking up the dark, heavy set from her closed-toe pumps. TL;DR? The pantyhose weren’t just functional, but essential to the overall look.
This look also reminded me that Stone isn’t a stranger to semi-opaque black tights; last year, the star wore an identical pair underneath her black trousers, styling them with Mary Janes. I know from experience socks can look and feel far too chunky tucked inside a ballet flat or Mary Jane; however, wearing them alone in the dead of winter just isn’t realistic. So, sheer tights find that perfect middle. They aren’t just a style hack that make short hems winter-ready, but they also allow you to wear those shoes that just don’t work with socks — year-round.
This is all to say: Tights are in. While colorful pantyhose are one of 2024’s boldest trends, their sheer, black alternative might be even more wearable, with stars like Stone, Kendall Jenner, and Margot Robbie relying on the see-through undergarment to warm-up and elevate their winter looks.
