I’ve been known to rewear one item over and over again; without meaning to, I can turn a tried-and-true into a self-imposed uniform. This is when I know it’s time to go back to the drawing board and remind myself that it’s not the individual piece I’m tired of; instead, it’s the singular way of styling it that I need to break away from. Of course, you can always tear through your closet and try out every new combination under the sun or you can follow Hailey Bieber’s lead and make a few simple swaps. I’m doing the latter.

At the start of the week, the Rhode skincare founder stepped out in a pair of classic, light-wash jeans and a red-and-blue striped polo from Loewe, two pieces she proceeded to wear again just a few days later. But rather than sticking to the same formula, she made both repeat wears feel entirely new with some chic additions.

At the base, Bieber swapped out basic black shoes for a pair of candy red loafers that coordinated with the red in her polo. It was a subtle matching moment, but it was just cohesive enough that it made the casual top and jeans feel a touch more elevated. And, taking it up another level, the star topped it all off with a timeless trench coat.

Her shoe swap was simple but so effective, and it’s the hack I’ll be relying on to make any of my tried-and-true looks feel a bit more fresh. That said, I was just as drawn to her jacket. Like so many other stars, including Amal Clooney and Angelina Jolie, Bieber proved that the French-girl staple is the easiest way to elevate any look.

Bieber’s trench coat from Bouguessa featured a slightly oversized fit that made the staple feel a touch more modern, as well as notched lapels and belted sleeves. If I wasn’t already fully sold on the idea of a trench coat being the most versatile jacket one can own, I now am for sure; the jacket complements everything from slacks to a LBD and looks just as good with casual wardrobe staples, too.

With two simple swaps, Bieber’s everyday outfit looked eons chicer; it might even be the first take on business-casual I actually want to wear. Her entire look inspired me to rewear my favorites, but this time with a pair of matching shoes and a timeless trench. And if you’re also ready to try her hack for making staples feel fresh again, you can find more coats inspired by her look below.
