There Is Reportedly "No Going Back" in Prince William and Prince Harry's Relationship

It's no secret that there's been tension between brothers Prince Harry and Prince William. Harry's memoir Spare and his Netflix docu-series with his wife, Meghan Markle, detailed some less-than-flattering facts about the Windsor family and reportedly caused a rift in their relationship. Now, in his new book Endgame, royal author and expert Omid Scobie is exploring where the brothers could go from here — and it appears that the damage is irreversible.

“Absolutely nothing has changed,” Scobie told People while promoting his new project, adding that time apart has only created more distance between the brothers. “I saw Harry’s release of Spare as his last attempt at telling his family how he’s felt for years. Because clearly, there’s never been an open enough forum to have these conversations or share these feelings.”

Endgame, which hits shelves on Nov. 28, chronicles the fallout between the brothers as well as the decline of modern monarchy. Scobie explores how the royal family continues to ignore their internal struggles and unstable infrastructure because “part of the buy-in from the [British] public is that the royal family is the nation’s family.” The book also claims that the Prince of Wales is currently more concerned with being loyal to the crown than to his brother and has even allegedly secretly aided the British press in sabotaging Harry.

“I was talking to a source quite early on in the process, and they called Harry a ‘defector’ and said that was William’s view,” explained Scobie. “These were two men who once upon a time were firmly aligned in their outlook. One of them had to move on to also protect the crown.”

If the firm wants to continue operating in the same way, Scobie thinks the royals will have to "learn and adapt" to modern times. “There’s a real chance here to learn and adapt to modern society and also make up for mistakes of the past,” he said. “It’s their move.” 

When it comes to William and Harry's relationship, Scobie adds that the brothers will realize what they have lost "far too late in the journey."

“In the eyes of some within the institution, Harry is a threat to the crown," he explained. "His freedom to exert his own thinking outside of the confines of the institution has made him the enemy.” 

So, where do they go from here? Unfortunately, the expert believes “there’s no going back.”
