Over a year has passed since Queen Elizabeth died in Sept. 2022, and now, we’re finally learning more about the royal family’s reactions to the late monarch’s final days. In an excerpt from royal author Omid Scobie’s new book titled Endgame, which was shared with People on Wednesday, the author seemingly confirmed what most of the world already suspected: Prince Harry was left out of many of the royals’ plans amid the queen’s death.
After explaining that Harry and his wife Meghan Markle had been in the U.K. for a series of engagements when Queen Elizabeth was first advised to rest, Scobie wrote that the Sussexes had “no idea” Buckingham Palace was already predicting Harry’s grandmother’s passing days before it happened.
Once the prince finally received a phone call from his father, the now-King Charles, to make his way to Scotland for the queen’s final hours, Scobie added that Harry allegedly texted his brother Prince William to make travel arrangements to “no response.”
“The Sussexes and their team had to operate in the dark,” the excerpt read. “Harry was informed that William had already secured a flight with his uncles Andrew and Edward (and Edward’s wife, Sophie), but he couldn’t get in touch with anyone about joining that flight.”
The passage continued, “‘It was upsetting to witness,’ said a source close to the Sussexes. ‘[Harry] was completely by himself on this.’”
Queen Elizabeth eventually passed away on Sept. 8, just hours before Harry touched down in Scotland to say goodbye — an announcement Harry allegedly learned via a BBC News alert.
“When Harry’s plane finally touched tarmac twenty minutes later, he received a text from Meghan urging him to call ASAP followed by a breaking news alert via the BBC News app with the announcement of the Queen’s death,” Scobie wrote.
“‘Harry was crushed,’ said a friend of the duke. 'His relationship with the Queen was everything to him,’” the passage continued. “‘She would have wanted him to know before it went out to the world. They could have waited just a little longer, it would have been nothing in the grand scheme of things, but no one respected that at all.’”
