Taylor Swift has been bringing it on the fashion front lately. This week, she made a case for pairing cool-girl boots with sweaters and miniskirts. Earlier in September, she stepped out for chic girls' nights out with Sophie Turner and Blake Lively, wearing a full-length jean duster and a pleated mini with knee-high boots, respectively. And, of course, she caused a stir (and perfected WAG style with Kansas City swag and a matching red lip) at two internet-breaking appearances at Chiefs games to support her new rumored beau NFL star Travis Kelce. That's not to mention her VMAs looks, including one especially memorable all-denim minidress for the after-party.
In short, it's been a very stylish fall for Swift so far, and the hits keep coming. Today, the singer wore her most subtly chic outfit to date out in New York City, pairing navy bike shorts with an oversized t-shirt and dad sneakers.
The look works on a few levels. First, it's the perfect level of coverage for this how-is-it-still-this-hot New York weather. (Dressing for the climate apocalypse? Take note.) Second, Swift's outfit details are on point: Between the green ruffled socks, neon dad sneakers (New Balances, naturally), sporty white baseball cap, and baby Louis Vuitton bag, there's a lot to love about this look. Besides the obvious comfort factor, which can't be understated, the proportions are perfect, with the chunky sneakers and socks balancing out the spandex shorts and oversized top.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the ensemble nods to not one but two fashion icons: Shania Twain and Princess Diana. Swift's tee nods to the country singer's "Any Man of Mine" era with a photo of the singer front and center — one can only assume Tay's a fan. As for the Princess Di reference, this look follows one of the royal's most famous outfit formulas: bike shorts, oversized tops, and chunky sneakers.
Of course, Diana usually opted for a sweatshirt (the purple Northwestern one is a personal favorite), but Swift's oversized tee brings the same energy. And sure, Swift's accessories and shoes are more 2023 than 1996, but the fact remains: Years after Diana's fashion heyday, it's still the perfect fall outfit.
