While her character Emily Charlton knew the ins, outs, ups, and downs of the fashion world, Emily Blunt explained that before she landed her iconic Devil Wears Prada role, she had no idea how to dress herself and that she was even told to be "more stylish" ahead of her auditions for the beloved film. Blunt explained the situation during An Evening With ... Emily Blunt, a special event that was held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles last night. She spoke to director Rob Marshall about the entertainment industry and shared her experiences leading up to getting a job that, presumably, a million girls would kill for.

"He said, 'Look, I would cast you, but the studio was wondering if you could wear something more stylish,'" Blunt said of director David Frankel. "To be fair, I was wearing a hoodie and jeans when I auditioned for it."

She added that she was told that the 2006 film was "just this little thing with Meryl Streep."

“I didn’t know enough in any way about the fashion industry going into that movie," she said. “I think I’d just been dressing like a teenage boy until that happened, and I learned a lot.”

That conversation echoed what she said last night, with her reminding fans that she learned so much about the fashion industry from her time filming Devil Wears Prada. Of course, these days, Blunt is a red carpet pro and works with stylist Jessica Paster.

"I didn't quite realize how intense it was, and friends of mine who've worked in the fashion industry say that that film managed to capture that," Blunt said, adding that working on Devil Wears Prada was "a voyage of discovery in every way. Not just about the industry itself but about style and the art of it and how important it is."
