It's no secret that Jennifer Lopez wears her heart on her sleeve. For starters, love has been the catalyst for much of her music and even film career (she was the early aughts rom-com queen, after all). She's also been in a number of very public relationships over the years — perhaps her marriage to Ben Affleck being the buzziest of them all. At the premiere of her upcoming visual album This Is Me ... Now: A Love Story on Tuesday, Lopez showed off her soft side again when giving her husband a shoutout during an emotional speech.
When addressing the crowd before screening the movie, which drops Friday on Prime Video, Lopez got teary when reminiscing on "the 20-year journey" that led her to this moment. According to Vulture, an audience member shouted, “It’s OK!” to which Lopez responded, “It is so OK! That’s what’s making me tear up.”
She went on to thank Affleck for being her muse and got choked up again before lightening things up by teasing her husband. “I know that he hates that I’m [thanking him] right now," she quipped.
Lopez and Affleck looked loved up on the red carpet, down to their coordinating looks. J.Lo stunned in a Zuhair Murad gown with a plunging black bustier and a underwear-baring sheer skirt covered in shimmery zodiac designs (a nod to the movie's tie to astrology).
The film follows Lopez's real-life quest to find love with a fantastical and imaginative twist. While many scenes from the hour-long film are metaphoric, she and director Dave Meyers explained during a press conference last week that they were all inspired by Lopez's true feelings. For his part, Affleck matched his wife in a simple black suit and tie. Many of Lopez's friends and peers including America Ferrera, Xochitl Gomez, Becky G, Jay Shetty, and Derek Hough, were also in attendance at Tuesday's event.
"Even the metaphor, sci-fi parts of the film, stem from a scent of Jen’s real story," Meyers explained during the Q&A. "That stemmed from her telling me the pain that she’s been in, specifically the pain that she went through when she broke up with Ben the first time. There was a lot of honesty that was shared in that first meeting. The heart factory became sort of a Titanic-level meltdown, which was a metaphor for what she was giving me as far as her truth."
"That mix of it being personal but also being able to be fantastical, surreal, magical, is I think what makes it really moving, entertaining, and super real," Lopez added.
