Julia Roberts Opened Up About Ex-Boyfriend Matthew Perry’s “Heartbreaking” Death for the First Time

Over a month has passed since Matthew Perry tragically died at his home on Oct. 28, after an apparent drowning, and now, the late actor’s ex-girlfriend and fellow star, Julia Roberts, is opening up about what he meant to her.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Roberts spoke about Perry’s death while reflecting on the time she spent with the entire Friends cast when guest-starring as Chandler’s former classmate, Susie, in the 1996 episode, “The One After the Super Bowl.”

“The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking,” Roberts shared. “I think that, you know, it just helps all of us just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can.”

The actress added that her experience on the Friends set calls to mind “all good thoughts and feelings,” explaining, “They were all so welcoming to me as just a kind of a one-off character and it was a really fun time.”

Matthew and Julia dated for six months between 1995 and 1996 after the late actor went to great lengths to convince her to make an appearance on Friends, which Perry detailed in part in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

“I sent her three dozen red roses and the card read: ‘The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers,’” Perry wrote of their early exchanges, which eventually evolved into communicating via fax machine. “I was so excited that some nights I would find myself out at some party sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cut the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived.”
