This year, we saw so many new trends grace the fashion stage, including cute dumpling bags, neon-yellow separates, and super-baggy cargo pants. Some came and went, while others latched onto the style scene for good. Metallic footwear belongs in the latter category, and Amal Clooney just proved its rightful place.

Clooney was spotted on a date night wearing a muted pink mini dress and an oversized, silky blazer. Her shoes made me do a double take, considering she ditched traditional beige pumps and opted for a pair of shiny, gold stilettos. She’s no stranger to this bold shoe trend, either; Clooney wore a PVC cap-toe version back in June, styled a silver silhouette earlier this month, and donned a pair that look awfully similar to her date-night footwear just three days ago. Clearly, she’s a fan.

While I’m officially naming Clooney the queen of metallics, she didn’t start the striking trend. I first saw Katie Holmes in reflective flats in January; shortly after, I spotted Anne Hathaway in silver Western boots. Soon enough, Kate Middleton, Eva Longoria, Helen Mirren, Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chrissy Teigen, and so many other celebs were stepping out in the iconic look.

I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I actually first wore the style in December of last year (that’s before Holmes!). My mom encouraged me to step out in a pair of mirrorball-like silver boots for a New Year’s Eve party. The metallic shoes instantly dressed up my all-black ensemble. To this day, it’s the easiest way to elevate any outfit, and that says a lot coming from a fashion editor.

Clooney-inspired shoes are also super versatile. While that may come as a shock, being they’re a daring fashion choice, it’s true. Wear reflective heels with basic jeans and an all-white T-shirt for a casual yet exciting look, or dress them up with a body-hugging cocktail dress and coordinating jewelry. Metallics are basically the new black; they’re sexy and perfect for year-round wear.

But what I love most about these statement shoes is how fearless they are. You can’t hide in these pumps, creating a confidence-building footwear choice that makes you feel like your best self. Shop more metallic gold heels, below, starting at $50.
