While Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen may be experts at evading the paparazzi these days, it seems that the former child stars were once great at helping their equally famous friends escape crazy situations, too (cue: “Getaway Car”). Case in point? In Welcome to the O.C. — a new book dissecting the history of the beloved early aughts series, The O.C. — Rachel Bilson revealed that the Olsens once rescued her from a particularly wild fan mob while explaining that her boyfriend at the time, Adam Brody, wasn’t as lucky.
According to Bilson, the rescue mission took place after she made an appearance alongside Mary-Kate and Ashley on a 2004 episode of MTV’s TRL, during which Brody accompanied her.
“The Olsen twins rescued me and threw me in their car,” Bilson explained of getting mobbed by fans outside of the Times Square studio. “I left Brody behind because I was so nervous and didn’t know what to do. And they were like, ‘Don’t you need to get your boyfriend?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we’ve got to go get him.’”
Brody and Bilson first started dating in 2003 after meeting on the set of The O.C.’s first season. The pair eventually split in 2006, with Adam going on to marry Leighton Meester in 2014 and Rachel going on to date fellow famous faces Hayden Christensen and Bill Hader.
Welcome to the O.C. also detailed Brody and Bilson’s varying accounts of the “Brodymania” that took place throughout the early 2000s.
While Brody noted that he “didn’t have many Beatles moments” during his run on the show, Bilson begged to differ: “I don’t want to say he’s lying because he may not remember,” the actress explained.
