The Royals Just Debunked Claims That Kate Middleton Was in a Coma

The palace is setting the record straight on Kate Middleton's health after it was reported that the princess was put in a medically induced coma following her surgery.

After Middleton quietly underwent her planned operation last month, journalist Concha Calleja falsely reported on Spanish news show Fiesta that Middleton had to be placed in an induced coma during her recovery period because of complications. On Friday, however, a source from the palace debunked the rumors and told People that the claims are "total nonsense."

"No attempt was made by that journalist to fact-check anything that she said with anyone in the household," the insider said. "It’s fundamentally, totally made-up, and I’ll use polite English here: it’s absolutely not the case."

Calleja previously reported that the Princess of Wales was in "great danger" and had "practically an entire hospital" set up in her Windsor home following her discharge from the London Clinic.

"The doctors had to take drastic decisions at that moment because of the complications that arose," she said at the time, per The Times. “The decision was to put her in an induced coma. They had to intubate her. There were serious complications that they didn’t expect because the operation went well, but the postoperative period didn’t go so well."

On Jan. 17, Kensington Palace confirmed that Middleton underwent a "planned abdominal surgery" the previous day at the London Clinic. The firm did not reveal the specific diagnosis. However, People confirmed that it was not cancer-related. During her stay in the hospital, the royal was visited by her husband, Prince William, and father-in-law, King Charles, who had a procedure of his own to correct an enlarged prostate. Nearly two weeks after her operation, Middleton was released on Jan. 29 to continue recuperating at home. The palace shared that she was "making good progress."

“The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided," the statement added.

While she is on the road to recovery, Middleton is not expected to make any public appearances until after Easter (Mar. 31).
