Pink is opening up about a scary moment that happened during her teenage years. In a new interview, the superstar singer explained that she almost died after an overdose at a rave in 1995. She was only 16 years old at the time. She also revealed that she came from a troubled home and that she got into drugs as a way to cope with the problems she was having with her parents. During an interview on 60 Minutes, Pink told host Cecilia Vega that the incident happened just weeks before she signed her first record deal.
“I was a punk. I had a mouth. I had a chip on my shoulder. Basically, I grew up in a house where every day my parents were screaming at each other, throwing things. They hated each other," she said. “I got into drugs. I was selling drugs."
“I was at a rave and I overdosed,” she added. “I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things. Then I was out. Done. Too much.”
Vega went on to ask the singer if she "almost died," to which she replied, “Yeah.” She continued, saying that the near-death experience was what prompted her to stop using "hard drugs" and that just a few weeks later, she signed a deal with R&B girl group Choice.
It's not the first time that Pink has been open about her past drug use. Back in 2012, she told Shape that while she wasn’t hospitalized from her overdose, it was a wake-up call and prompted her to make major changes.
“I remember getting up off the floor in the morning – and that was the last time I ever touched a drug again,” she said. “It was also the day a DJ offered to let me sing on hip-hop night. His only caveat was that I couldn’t do drugs, so I didn’t. That’s the thing with me — once I make up my mind, I’m done.”
