Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson are out here making sure we don't forget about Ken. Although, between Ken's Grammy and Golden Globe nominations and record-breaking movie Barbie, he's had a pretty memorable 2023. Nonetheless, in the spirit of giving, Gosling and Ronson just gifted us with a Ken the EP with three new iterations of their chart-topping (and Grammy-nominated) hit that made Gosling crack Billboard's Hot 100 list for the first time.
The new drop includes the original track, as well as an “In My Feelings Acoustic" version, a “Purple Disco Machine Remix," and a “Merry Kristmas Barbie” edition. And it doesn't stop there, because Gosling and producers Ronson and Andrew Wyatt also released a video alongside the holiday rendering that captures the Oscar-nominated actor performing the new Christmas-ified tune with a live band.
At the beginning of the music video, Gosling can be seen walking into the recording studio with a Santa mug before sitting down at the piano to play a few chords (very Seb from La La Land). As a part of the bit, Gosling then starts to brainstorm ideas for the new version.
"Mark, what if I lean into the whole 'Hey Girl' thing and go 'Hey girl, it doesn't seem to matter what I do ...'" he says, referencing the viral and internet-beloved 'Hey Girl' memes.
"Yeah, I think that it's different," Ronson responds. "I'm not saying I don't like it but the original has this delicate vulnerability that you just fall in love with, and I'm just not sure."
"Everyone already heard the song, so I'm just trying to mix it up, you know, just keep it fresh," Gosling insisted.
"The Christmas is making it fresh," Ronson adds.
What makes the song festive you ask? The orchestral accompaniment, background bell sounds, strings of lights, tinsel-wrapped microphone, and Gosling's gruff, "Merry Christmas, Barbie, wherever you are," at the end of the song are what make this the perfect track to blast at your Christmas Eve party.
“Merry Kristmas Barbie," as well as the other two tracks, “In My Feelings Acoustic" and “Purple Disco Machine Remix," are available now to stream on Spotify, so you can keep the Kenergy going all season long.
