King Charles Has Been Diagnosed With Cancer

In keeping with its promise to be open about King Charles's health, Buckingham Palace shared today that the monarch has been diagnosed with cancer, though it did not say what kind. The BBC reports that it is not prostate cancer, though the cancer was found during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.

Buckingham Palace adds that the king "remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible." For the time being, Charles will not be making any public appearances, and other senior royals are expected to step up while he's undergoing treatment. Charles, who is 75 years old, will continue his "constitutional role as head of state." He was last seen at a church service in Sandringham on Sunday.

A statement from Buckingham Palace explained the situation:

"During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

When Charles shared news of his enlarged prostate, he hoped it would make men more aware of their own health and get checked. It worked, as several news outlets reported that searches about prostate health spiked in the U.K. and Australia.
