Ryan Gosling Won't Let His Daughters Watch 'Barbie' for This Funny Reason

Ryan Gosling's daughters Esmeralda, 9, and Amada, 7, may be at prime Barbie doll-playing age, but that doesn't mean the actor has plans to show them the Golden Globe-nominated blockbuster anytime soon. Why? Because Gosling doesn't want to subject them to his portrayal of the man behind the tan, Barbie's clingy boyfriend, Ken.

“I don’t know if you should watch your father as Ken," he joked during a recent interview with E! News at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. "I don’t know what age is a good age to see your father do that. It gets pretty crazy.”

Although his and Eva Mendes's daughters haven't seen their dad's cinematic masterpiece on the big screen, they did accompany him to set one day to watch him bring the character to life. “They’ve seen little parts of it and they came to set one day when I did a big musical number," he revealed.

Perhaps one day, though, Gosling will cave and allow his daughters to watch the record-breaking film. After all, the actor saw the movie as “a way to sort of make something both for and with them.”

"I knew that they loved it, because they kept saying at first, ‘Hey, can we go to Target?’ And we go to Target, and then they’d slowly go by the Barbie aisle," he remembered. "And my wife and I sort of realized, ‘OK, I think it’s time to let them have Barbies.’"

And in a move totally on par with Gosling's hilarious commentary on Ken's experience, his daughters have "no interest in Ken, which was pretty interesting, too.”

Over the weekend, Gosling and collaborator Mark Ronson took home a Critics Choice Award for their song "I'm Just Ken" from the film. Gosling's befuddled reaction to the win went viral online shortly after. His wife Mendes shared the clip to social media with the caption, "I LOVE HIM!!!!"
